Briefing note: Speed boat accident on 30 May 2017
This note presents a brief account of the venets that followed the distress alert that was made to the hospital on the night of 31 May 2017 in relation to the Speed Boart accidient that resulted in a number of casualties. This note provides and account of the intial events and those that followed in term of presentation of the patient, their classification and course of action.
The hospital emergency code was activate on 30 May 2017 at 23:06pm for over two hours till the hospital was assured that all casualties related to the accident had been attended to by the relevant teams. A total of fourteen (14) victims were brough to the hopistal presenting with different levels of injuries. The emergency status was deactivated on 31 May 2017 at o2:30am.
A triage was conducted for the patients as they arrived and classified into 3 main categories.
- RED - Critial/life threatening injuries
- ORANGE - Seriously injured
- GREEN - Stable
Four patients were classified as RED, seven patients as ORANGE and three as Green. The Events Timeline above shows the series of events that occured from the time of emergency activation to de-activation of the code.
The second timeline, Patient Progress Timeline shows the sereis of events that happened to each victim once they reached the hospital till such time they were discharged. Fortunately, all 14 victims were saved and all recovered well with the interventions and treatments. The last of the patients was discharge from hospital on 19 June 2017, 20 days after the incident.
We take this opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work of the emergency team of the hospital and all those who have contributed the smooth evacuation, communicatin and patient care from the time of the accident till all patients were broaght to the hospital.
