Open letter to medical practitioners

September 25, 2012

Dear Practitioner

Research conducted suggests that low bone density, particularly in postmenstrual women, may indicate the need for treatment to reduce the risk of hip and spine fractures. The earlier bone’s loss is detected, the sooner the treatment can be initiated to halt the bone loss. Bone density measurements can evaluate response to that we know whether the prescribed treatment is effective or if we need to modify the approach.

We have recently acquired a state-of-the-art bone densitometer for axial measurement of bone density. This highly sensitive densitometer identifies bone loss at the major fracture sites i.e. femur and spine in just minutes. Along with the standard sites we also offer:

  • Dual Femur measurement to assess the average density of both femurs for confident patient management.
  • Total Body measures both bone density and body fat assessment. An excellent tool to assess weight loss therapies, endocrine/growth disorders, pediatric and patients with secondary osteoporosis.

In addition, given that the Maldives has a high prevalence of thalassemia, the assessment of bone mineral density is of a major benefit. There is evidence that on average there is high chance of osteoporosis and fracture rates in thalassemics compared to the general population. This technology can play an important role in the management of such patients as well.

We are please to introduce this technology for the first time in the Maldives and are ready to assist you by providing early detection of low bone density. Hence we wanted to share this information on a more personal note. Please feel free to make your patients aware of this service. We are open to take appointments starting 25 September 2012.

Sincerely,

Ahmed Afaal

Managing Director
