- by all staff and management -

Two years back, ADK Hospital welcomed the first volunteer nurse, through a collaboration project with JOCV. The Japanese nurse, Mayumi sister spent the past two years, with the Hospital. She has completed her tenure and is set to leave the country to go back to Japan. It has been a great experience for the ADK Hospital’s Nursing Department to have her here. The main focus of her work during the tenure is developing nursing standards and implementing them at ADK Hospital. These of course have lead to a number of improvements and paved way for further development in the Department.

Sister Mayumi’s work also included a number of training sessions to nurses and unskilled support staff in life support, patient transfers and hand hygiene and also hospital waste management procedures. The staff and the Management took these initiatives very positively and supported these efforts to improve nursing care at the Hospital. It was a learning experience for the staff while instilling a learning culture in the Department. The Nursing Department now has an Education Committee that continuously looks at improving the skills of working nurses through training and case studies.

Apart from work, one of the notable initiatives of sister Mayumi was the mobilization of humanitarian aid to the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, last year. She played a leading role in mobilizing assistance through the ADK Group and presenting the aid to Japan.

Moreover, this has been a gesture of the friendship that Maldives and Japan has had for a long time. According to sister Mayumi, it was a great experience and she will never forget what she learnt in a new culture. The Hospital, and the people as well as the country will be dear to heart and she will always long to come to back.

For the organization, this collaborative program improved the relationship with the JOCV and opens doors for future collaboration in areas of healthcare. It is important that knowledge and skills from the advanced health systems in the world are brought to our health system and develop through many of these exercises. The benefits definitely come to our people. Mayumi’s work will continue to be built upon and improved to make better things happen to the Nursing Department at the Hospital.

The Management takes this opportunity to thank sister Mayumi for the hard work that she put in to the improvement of work. We also thank JICA and JOCV for the assistance and hope to continue the partnership in future.  We wish sister Mayumi the best of luck for the future and we will definitely miss your smile.  Saikō no kōun. Watashitachiha anatanoegao o ketsujō suru koto ni.
